What are some of the basic software that everyone should have?

I'm about to build a PC of my brother (who lives in another state) and want to know which software must be installed to keep your computer running in top shape, or even programs that are useful, such as paint / see photo / recording software, freeware preffered So far I have: 1. Grisoft AVG Free Edition - (antivirus) 2. Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal - (spyware remove) 3. Spybot Search and Destroy - (spyware remover) 4. VideoLAN - (plays video formats) 5. Winrar / Winzip 6.
